NeuroRehab Specific:
Primarily descriptive studies identifying acoustic measures that can be used for characterizing speech and voice patterns, possibly useful for treatment outcomes. We recommend consideration of the ASHA working group core set of acoustic measures and described methods for voice parameters: Patel RR, Awan SN, Barkmeier-Kraemer J, Courey M, Deliyski D, Eadie T, Paul D, ?vec JG, Hillman R. Beyond Friedrich's ataxia, there is an extensive literature on acoustic analysis of speech to characterize the severity of articulation, resonance, and voice problems, or to measure treatment outcomes in those with other neurological conditions that affect the subsystems of speech. Additional measures should be considered for those with other neurological conditions that affect the subsystems of speech. CPP was found to be distinguishing between those with Friedreich's ataxia and normal controls in both sustained phonation and connected speech (Vogel et al, 2017; Carson et al, 2015). Additional measures have been found to be sensitive to longitudinal changes in people with FA. These include utterance duration in milliseconds, variation in frequency in connected speech (vocal frequency SDin Hz), articulation rate (syllables/sec), pause duration, voice onset time (ms), rate of spectral change (avg. rate of change in the spectral envelope across 50ms of speech), degree of spectral change, and signal-to-noise ratio (Vogel et al, 2014; Rosen et al, 2012; Brendel et al, 2013; Ackermann et al, 1995; Hertrich et al 1995, Kent el al 2000, Folker et al 2012). Nasalance could be used to measure hypernasality, but has not been shown to be definitively different than controls (Poole et al, 2015).
